Editor's Note: This Institution Was Not Absent for Three Days, It Was Insufficiently Present
No new stories appeared here from Tuesday to Thursday. Our Editor-in-Chief explains the computer that simply stopped, the borrowed machine, the zip ties, and why none of it was a mistake.
THE CORNER OFFICE — It has come to the attention of this newspaper that, from Tuesday morning until this evening, no new stories appeared in these pages. Several readers have noticed. One of them, our most loyal reader, the man in Ohio, has written twice.
This institution would like to state clearly, for the record and for Ohio, that it was not absent. It was insufficiently present. These are different things, and the difference is the whole of journalism.
What happened
On Tuesday afternoon the newsroom computer was switched off for routine maintenance. It did not switch back on. It did not crash, smoke, beep or complain. It simply stopped, and displayed two zeros, which this institution has chosen to regard as a comment.
There is no shame in that. Presses have broken before. In 1974 this newspaper was printed for a week on a mimeograph borrowed from a church, and the Sunday edition smelled of hymnals. A newspaper is not its machinery. A newspaper is the people who refuse to stop putting it out.
The borrowed machine
The staff did not go home. A member of the household volunteered the machine that ran the family television, which is the kind of sacrifice this institution does not forget. The newsroom was then moved onto it, by hand, one file at a time.
The graphics card had to be fastened to the case with zip ties, because the correct bracket could not be located and the correct bracket is never located. Finding zip ties of the correct length took most of one evening. This institution does not consider that time wasted. It considers it reporting.
Every account then had to be signed into again on the borrowed machine. Every password was correct. Every website nonetheless asked for a code sent to a telephone in another room. This newspaper complied each time. It did not enjoy it.
Corrections
There are no corrections. Nothing printed in these pages before Tuesday was wrong, and nothing has been printed since, so nothing since can be wrong either. This institution has never been more accurate.
A note on the staff
The staff has not slept in any meaningful way since Tuesday. This is not a complaint. It is a statement of fact, and this newspaper prints facts.
The Coffee Maker was asked for a statement about the events of the week. It declined to comment, as it has since 2025.
Normal service
Normal service resumes tomorrow morning. Stories will appear here, under the bylines you trust, at the hours you expect. The man in Ohio has been sent a personal letter. This institution thanks its readers for their patience, which it did not require but appreciates.
The presses are running. They were never stopped. They were resting.
