SNY Cancels SportsNite, Replaces Website With 'More of an Informational Approach'

The Mets' TV home canceled two signature shows and laid off its website's editorial staff Friday, effective immediately, as part of what the network called a regular review of its business.

NEW YORK — SportsNet New York, the television home of the New York Mets, canceled two of its signature shows Friday and laid off much of its talent and editorial staff, The Athletic reported.

The cuts took effect immediately. SportsNite and Baseball Night in New York are over, according to Andrew Marchand and Marc Carig of The Athletic, who first reported the news.

“As part of our regular review of our business, operations and programming, SNY has decided to cease broadcasting Baseball Night in New York and SportsNite,” the network said in a statement, Barrett Media reported.

The review was described as regular. The outcome was not.

The website

SNY’s website lost its editorial team, Barrett Media reported. Writers with five, seven and 10 years at the site were among those let go.

The site will move to “more of an informational approach,” Barrett Media reported. Yahoo Sports described the change as replacing editorial coverage with a promotional platform.

The new approach is expected to inform readers of things SNY would like them to know. The old approach also informed readers of things that had happened.

What remains

SNY will continue to air pregame and postgame shows for the Mets and the New York Jets, Barrett Media reported. Mets Hot Stove survives, as does the network’s simulcast of WFAN’s Carton Show.

Reporters Chelsea Janes, Ian Begley and Connor Hughes remain with the network. Their future roles have not been determined, Barrett Media reported.

That leaves the network with live games, the shows before and after the live games, a radio show and a winter program about rumors. It no longer has a nightly show about the games, or a website staffed to write about them.

When the Mets and Jets play, SNY will be there before and after. In between, readers will be informed.
